What Is House Music
House music is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in the United States in the 1980s.
It is characterized by a repetitive four-on-the-floor beat and a typical tempo of 120 beats per minute as a re-emergence of 1970’s disco.
House music was created by DJs and music producers from Chicago’s underground club culture and evolved slowly in the early/mid 1980s, and as DJs began altering disco songs to give them a more mechanical beat.
By early 1988, House became mainstream and supplanted the typical 80s music beat. House has a large influence on pop music, especially dance music.
Many sub-genres such as Acid house, ambient house, Balearic beat, big room house, deep house, diva house, electro house, funky house, future house, garage house, ghetto house, ghettotech, Latin house, microhouse, outsider house, progressive house, tech house, tribal house, tropical house, and UK hard house.
House music has remained popular on radio and in clubs while retaining a foothold on the underground scenes across the globe.
Obviously characterized by a repetitive 4/4 beat, which means that the bass drum hits on each beat.
Given that It typically has a tempo of around 120 beats per minute. So DJs and producers in the genre started by altering disco songs.
At this point they used more mechanical beat using drum machines and kick drums. This distinctive beat is a fundamental element of house.
Chicago: House originated in Chicago and was pioneered by African American DJs and producers in the city.
Indeed some of the notable figures in the early scene in Chicago include Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy, Jesse Saunders, Chip E., Steve Silk Hurley, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Marshall Jefferson, Phuture, and others.
Furthermore these individuals played a crucial role in shaping the genre and its evolution.
Expansion to Other Cities: House didn’t stay confined to Chicago; it expanded to other American cities like New York City and eventually became a worldwide phenomenon.
indeed its infectious beats and innovative sound production techniques captured the imagination of music enthusiasts across the globe.
Electronic Dance Music
In addition House draws influences from various musical genres, and its parent genres include Electronic Dance Music (EDM), Disco, Electro, Funk, Soul music, Jazz, and even Pop music. So these genres have contributed to the diverse and eclectic nature of house music.
Marshall Jefferson

The legendary Chicago house producer created one of house music’s most influential records, Move Your Body. He tours the world today as a DJ
The first time I remember hearing house music was at the Music Box in Chicago [in the early 1980s]. The Music Box was like being in a totally different world. It was heaven for me.
‘House’ music at that time meant stuff from Philadelphia, New York, even Italian stuff. There was a lot of European influences. Everything was played on the one dancefloor. The Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams was huge. I even remember The Look Of Love by ABC being played by Ron Hardy.
House Music in the 90s
While House Music was still the niche, It did see some popularly and success. Artists like Black Box. C&C Music Factory, Haddaway, Amber and Crystal Waters all saw international success keeping dancefloors throughout the 90s.
House Music today is just as popular as ever with a ever changing genre. Not much radio time as it did back in the late 2000s and early 2010s. House has kept the world dancing for over 50 years. From its beginnings in Chicago to today, House Music has touched some many people.
